From Crisis to Community: Remembering our Katrina Response

This September marks 20 years since Catholic Charities East Bay opened its doors and hearts to survivors of Hurricane Katrina who found refuge in the East Bay. In the wake of unimaginable loss — homes, family members, churches, and entire communities — our agency led the largest long-term Katrina recovery program in Northern California.

One of the several awards Catholic Charities received for their Katrina response.

With your prayers and support, Catholic Charities East Bay helped hundreds of individuals — and more than 300 families — who had fled Louisiana to rebuild their lives in the East Bay. We offered emergency food, clothing, and housing, along with job training, medical care, and transportation. Just as important, our counselors walked alongside survivors, providing intensive case management and mental health support to begin the long process of healing from the emotional and spiritual trauma of displacement.

This ministry of care grew stronger through partnerships with local parishes, individuals across the Diocese of Oakland, and organizations such as the Red Cross, FEMA, Alameda County, and other nonprofits. Together, we showed that disaster recovery is not just about immediate relief but also about long-term accompaniment—helping people find stability, dignity, and hope.

Two decades later, the resilience of these families continues to shine as a testament to what’s possible when faith and compassion come together. Thank you for being part of a Catholic Charities community that responds with love in times of crisis.
