Compassionate housing assistance and grief support helped one older adult remain safely housed while navigating the loss of her husband and a sudden reduction in household income.
After the loss of her husband, Amanda faced a difficult transition as she adjusted to life without her partner while waiting for her Social Security benefits to be adjusted. During this period of change, the temporary reduction in household income made it challenging to keep up with rent, putting her housing stability at risk. Through our Housing Services program, Amanda received one month of rental assistance. Her case manager also worked with a community partner to secure funding for an additional month of rent, providing the support she needed to remain safely housed during this transition.
Recognizing that stability involves more than meeting immediate financial needs, Amanda was also connected with grief support services to help her navigate the emotional impact of losing her husband. Together with her case manager, she developed a long-term housing stability plan, including exploring the possibility of having her daughter move back into the home to contribute toward household expenses.
With compassionate support and thoughtful planning, Amanda was able to remain in her home while adjusting to a new chapter of life. Her story reflects the importance of meeting individuals where they are and providing the resources, guidance, and care needed to help them move forward.
