Volunteer Center of the East Bay and CCEB Collaborate
During “Week of Caring”

“Week of Caring” is a United Way, Volunteer Center of the East Bay (VCEB), and Chevron sponsored event that connects local non-profits with corporate volunteers. September 10 - 15, 2012 marked the 22nd year for this effort which matched more than 80 East Bay area non-profits with hundreds of corporate volunteers. In 2011 more than 3,200 corporate volunteers worked in teams with more than 100 local nonprofit agencies.

VCEB invited Catholic Charities of the East Bay (CCEB) to submit its volunteer projects, and Chevron employees responded. Five dedicated Chevron employees volunteered to help clean out CCEB's garage in Oakland, and eight more volunteered to help clean up the yard of a home in Richmond that had been donated to CCEB. “The support from Chevron over the years has been tremendous,” says Solomon Belette Chief Executive Officer of CCEB. “Not only did they donate $168,000 to one of our programs, Project ACCESS, last year, but they also took a day out of their busy schedules to volunteer for us too. They are helping to build a strong community and setting a wonderful example of civic engagement.”

Project ACCESS (Advancing Child Care Education and Student Success) is an early childhood child care job training program of Catholic Charities of the East Bay.  The program provides education, career and other support services to English learners who want to enter and advance in the Early Childhood Education field.

CCEB invited a Project ACCESS mentor, Geysel Garcia, and mentee, Maria Gallo, to share their stories with the volunteers. Garcia has been involved with Project ACCESS for 15 years. When she was invited to be a mentor to encourage and guide mentees such as Maria Gallo she couldn’t refuse. Early Childhood Education students like Maria are very grateful to CCEB and mentors like Geysel, and CCEB is very grateful to companies like Chevron for their financial and volunteer support!
