I am here to endorse the CATHOLIC CAMPAIGN FOR HUMAN DEVELOPMENT (CCHD), one of the major projects of the Catholic Church, helping people to take responsibility for their lives and giving them a way out of poverty. By helping CCHD, we can help them help themselves.”
— The Most Reverend Michael C. Barber, S.J., Bishop of Oakland
The Catholic Campaign for Human Development helps break the cycles of poverty and injustice in communities throughout the East Bay. In this video, some of the East Bay CCHD grant recipients tell their stories of empowerment and transformation, and Bishop Michael Barber offers a strong endorsement of CCHD.
The Catholic Campaign for Human Development is the domestic anti-poverty, social justice program of the U.S. Catholic Bishops. Its mission is to address the root causes of poverty in America through the promotion and support of community-controlled self-help organizations. To learn more about the work of the USCCB to combat poverty, visit CCHD online at http://www.usccb.org/about/catholic-campaign-for-human-development/.
Founded in 1969, CCHD follows the pastoral strategy of empowerment of the poor through a methodology of participation and education for justice, leading towards solidarity between poor and non-poor. This is a stance impelled by the Church’s biblical tradition, modern Catholic Social Teaching, and the pervasive presence of poverty in the United States. This ministry of justice is rooted in our baptism and faith commitment.
CCHD Annual Collection: November 19-20, 2016
The Catholic Campaign for Human Development Annual Collection is always held the weekend before Thanksgiving, which this year is November 19-20. This collection, taken up in the Oakland Diocese and in all dioceses throughout the country, provides the funds for CCHD grants.
The CCHD Local Committee and the CCHD national office have created some excellent parish resources to help promote the collection, including homily helpers, bulletin announcements, colorful flyers and the CCHD video (above) highlighting some local projects funded by CCHD. Please go to the links below to access these resources.
